Friends

You can count them on one hand.  They always know how to make you laugh – how to shape sorrow and disappointment into workable chunks and because they have chosen to be your friend, they don’t just up and disappear without a word.

I met two of these special people today. For us it has been a long time separated by oceans and continents that cost a fortune to cross. In our time apart life has buffeted us in ways we could not have imagined. Children have been born, careers reformed, homes relocated and parents have died, but when I see the grace and understanding this has given my two young friends, I know the journey is going well.

No pictures (“Don’t you dare put this on FB!”) but we all know the part of friendship that matters cannot be recorded. It’s something deep within us. A memory with a heartbeat that never, ever fades.
